The car is a carbon tub with aluminium subframes bolted to each end. That is why the first question after an impact is whether the tub took load, not which panels are broken.
Every McLaren road car since the 12C is built around a carbon fibre tub with aluminium subframes bolted to the front and the rear of it. So the first question after an impact is not which panels are damaged. It is whether the tub took any load, because the answer decides whether the rest of the estimate means anything at all.
MonoCell, MonoCage, and what a carbon tub changes
MonoCell and MonoCage are not the same structure
The original MonoCell, and the MonoCell II under the Sports Series cars, is a tub made up of the floor, the sills and the bulkheads. MonoCage, which arrived on the P1 and was developed further for the 720S, carries the carbon structure upward to take in the roof and the upper rails, so more of the car's stiffness and more of its rollover protection sit inside that single moulded part. The practical difference is scope: on a MonoCage car, damage high on the body is far more likely to have reached primary structure than it is on a MonoCell car.
A tub is not sectioned the way a rail is
On a metal car there is usually a published sectioning joint, a place the manufacturer allows a damaged rail to be cut and a partial spliced in. A moulded carbon tub has no such joint. It was cured as one piece in a tool, so anything done to it is a laminate repair governed by where the damage sits in the load path. There is no equivalent of cutting it back to clean metal.
The aluminium subframes are the parts meant to be destroyed
The front and rear subframes bolt to the tub and carry the suspension, the powertrain and the crash structures. They are designed to fold and absorb energy so the tub does not have to. A car that arrives with a wrecked front frame and an intact tub has behaved exactly as engineered, and the repair from there is substantial but conventional: replace, mount, measure, verify against the factory points.
Structural measurement and frame repairAssessing tub damage, including when the answer is no
Carbon hides what happened to it
Metal deforms and stays deformed, which is why a trained eye can read a steel or aluminium structure. A carbon laminate that has been overloaded can delaminate internally and spring back with almost nothing showing on the surface. A visual inspection of a tub is not an assessment of a tub, and treating it as one is the single most expensive mistake available on this car.
The assessment happens with the car apart, not from photographs
The tub is inspected once it can actually be reached, which means after the body, the subframes and the interior have come off it. Suspect areas are examined by methods that look below the surface rather than at it. Any figure quoted before that point is a placeholder, and an estimate written from a set of phone photos on a car like this is not an estimate, it is a guess with a number attached.
How carbon damage is assessedSometimes the honest answer is that the tub does not go back in service
Where damage sits in a primary load path, or where the laminate has been compromised across a structural section, the correct outcome is that the car becomes a claim rather than a repair. That is an uncomfortable sentence to put on a body shop page and it is the one that protects the owner, because the alternative is a car that looks immaculate sitting on a structure that will not behave as designed in the next impact. An owner is entitled to hear that answer from the shop rather than from the next accident.
Dihedral doors: one hinge doing two jobs
One hinge does two jobs at once
The dihedral door pivots on a hinge mounted forward on the body that swings the door outward and upward in the same movement. All of the load and all of the geometry pass through that one mounting area. The consequence is that a side impact anywhere near the front of the door aperture becomes a door-geometry problem even when the door skin itself looks untouched.
The aperture governs the door, never the other way round
If the opening has moved, adjusting the door to suit it gives you a car that opens and shuts and never seals. Wind noise and water intrusion follow, usually a month after delivery. The order is structure, then aperture, then hinge carrier, then the door, and skipping straight to the door is the most common reason one of these repairs comes back.
Alignment is verified through the sweep, not at the shut line
A dihedral door has to clear the body through an arc, so it is checked at several points of travel rather than closed. A door set to look correct in the shut position can strike the roof or the front arch at full open, and that is discovered by opening it fully with intent rather than by looking at the gaps.
Why two similar looking McLarens get very different estimates
Panel damage and structural damage really are separate here
On a unibody car the outer skin is part of the structure, so a heavy panel hit is usually also a structural hit. On a McLaren the body hangs off the tub and the subframes, which means the two can genuinely be independent. That is why two of these cars with similar looking damage can produce estimates that are nothing alike, and why an owner should be suspicious of a number produced before anyone has established which kind of damage they have.
It also means a frightening looking impact can be contained
A destroyed clamshell or a shattered front end reads as catastrophic in the driveway and can turn out to be a parts and refinish job with an untouched structure underneath. The inspection is what separates the two cases, and it is worth doing before anyone concludes anything from how the car looks on a flatbed.
Bumper and panel damagePaint over carbon, and colours that move with the angle
Gloss over exposed weave is an unforgiving substrate
A painted metal panel has primer under the colour, and primer hides a multitude of small imperfections. A gloss finish over visible carbon has nothing between the clear and the laminate, so every ripple, every print-through and every flaw in the surface below is reported straight through to the finish. Preparation on those parts is the job, and the spraying is the easy part.
These colours move with the angle you look from
The oranges, pearls and deep metallics these cars are ordered in shift noticeably off-axis. A match confirmed head-on at close range can separate visibly at forty five degrees in daylight, which is exactly how people look at a parked car. The target is set on a sprayed card, made with the same gun and the same number of passes the car will get, then checked against the panel outdoors at several angles.
How paint is matched and verifiedThe paint code describes the car when it was new
Years of Florida ultraviolet move a finish away from its original formula, so mixing strictly to code reproduces the colour the car was delivered in rather than the colour the rest of the car is now. On an older car the code is a starting point for the mix and the panel is the thing that decides whether it is right.
What has to be re-referenced once the metalwork is done
The suspension has a baseline that body work can move
The chassis system is hydraulically interlinked and works from ride-height and position references at each corner. Replace a component in that circuit, or change the alignment, and those references shift underneath the control software. The car does not usually complain. It sits and behaves subtly wrong, and the owner reports it as the car feeling different rather than as a fault.
Sensors are aimed, not merely bolted back on
On the later cars carrying forward-facing driver assistance, a bumper or a windscreen is a calibration operation as well as a panel operation. A sensor sitting a fraction of a degree out is looking at the next lane by the range at which it would need to act, and it will normally not set a fault to announce that. This is the line most often absent from an estimate written without the car present.
Scan at teardown as well as at the end
Disconnecting the battery is one of the first jobs on a structural repair, and it can take stored fault information with it. A scan before anything comes apart preserves what the car recorded about the impact, and the closing scan documents the state it actually leaves in rather than the state everyone assumes.

Colours in this family are strongly directional. A match confirmed head-on can separate visibly off-axis in daylight, so the card is checked outdoors at several angles against the actual panel before anything is sprayed on the car.

A spectral reading gives a starting formula, not a finished answer. On a car that has spent years in Florida sun the panel decides whether the mix is right, and the sprayed card is how that gets settled before the gun goes near the vehicle.
Artura Hybrid Collision Specialist
Certified for McLaren hybrid collision repair with high-voltage safety protocols
On a hybrid the sequence changes before any panel comes off. The high-voltage system is isolated and given time to discharge, and the battery and its enclosure are inspected for impact before the structural plan is written, because damage in that area rewrites the plan rather than adding a line to it.

What is the difference between a MonoCell and a MonoCage?
MonoCell, including the MonoCell II under the Sports Series cars, is a carbon tub made of the floor, sills and bulkheads. MonoCage, first seen on the P1 and developed for the 720S, extends that carbon structure upward to include the roof and the upper rails. For a repair it changes scope rather than method: on a MonoCage car, damage high on the body is much more likely to have reached primary structure.
Can you tell me from photos whether my tub is damaged?
No, and neither can anyone else. A carbon laminate that has been overloaded can delaminate internally and spring back with almost nothing visible on the surface, so a visual check is not an assessment. The tub is inspected once the body, subframes and interior are off it and it can actually be reached. Any number quoted before that point is a placeholder.
Is a damaged carbon tub always the end of the car?
No, but the range of damage that permits a return to service is narrow, and it depends on where the damage sits in the load path rather than on how big it looks. Where the laminate has been compromised across a structural section, the correct outcome is a claim rather than a repair. A cosmetically perfect car sitting on a compromised structure is a worse result for the owner than a total loss.
The front of my car is destroyed but the cabin looks untouched. Is that good or bad?
Usually good. The front and rear aluminium subframes bolt to the tub and are designed to fold and absorb energy so the tub does not have to. A wrecked front frame with an intact tub means the car did what it was engineered to do, and the repair from there is substantial but conventional. It is when the load travelled past the subframe mounts that the assessment changes.
Why does my door not seal properly since the repair?
Almost always because the door was adjusted to fit an aperture that had moved, rather than the aperture being brought back first. The dihedral hinge carries the whole geometry through one mounting area, so the correct order is structure, aperture, hinge carrier, then door, and the alignment is verified through the full arc of travel rather than in the shut position.
