Tesla collision repair in Orlando

The most expensive line on a Tesla estimate is usually decided by a boundary drawn in a repair document. Large parts of the underbody at each end of a current Model Y, and the front of the newer Model 3, are single high-pressure aluminium die castings where another car has dozens of stampings and welds. A casting is not straightened: the alloy has almost no useful give for cold work and heat takes its properties out, so the choice is never pull it or replace it. The choice is whether this damage falls inside a published repair area or outside it, and on a vehicle where the battery pack is a structural member between those castings, the answer to that decides whether the pack comes out. A casting is not straightened, so the estimate is a boundary question
The underbody at each end is one part, not an assembly
Where a conventional car has a rail, a wheelhouse, a crossmember and a floor extension spot welded together, the current cars have a single casting. There is no seam to cut back to and no stack of individual parts to replace one at a time. That is why the usual estimating instinct, find the nearest joint and section there, does not have anything to grip on.
A die casting is not straightened, and there is no heat procedure for it
The alloy and the casting process produce a part with very little useful ductility for cold work, and warming it to persuade it back does not exist as an option because heat is what takes the properties out. So a bent casting has not been bent in the way a rail is bent. It has been damaged, and the question is what the manufacturer permits doing about it, not how much pull is needed.
Which turns the estimate into a boundary question
Manufacturer procedures define specific, limited areas of a casting that may be repaired, with specified cut lines, specified replacement pieces and specified adhesive and fasteners. Damage inside one of those areas is a defined operation with a known scope. Damage a few inches outside it means the casting comes out. The entire difference between a large repair and a very large one is where the damage sits relative to a line published in a document, which is a good reason to pull that document before writing a number rather than after.
On a structural-pack car, removing a casting means dealing with the battery
Where the pack is bonded and bolted between the castings and stiffens the body, it is not a component under the floor. It is part of the floor. Taking a casting out means removing a stressed member from the structure, which changes how the vehicle has to be supported, changes the sequence of the job and changes the labour. Establishing which kind of pack is on the lift comes before anything else on that plan.
Measurement is what proves the result either way
A three-dimensional measurement of the structure against factory data opens the job and closes it. The system is shut down to procedure, isolated, and proven de-energised rather than assumed to be. That is the first operation on the vehicle, not a step somewhere in the middle, and it is what makes everything after it safe to do. It also means the vehicle sits for a defined period before work begins, which is part of the schedule.
The pack gets inspected before a repair plan exists
Any strike to the underbody over the pack, any impact that loaded the sill, and any event involving heat is an inspection item first. What is found there does not adjust the plan. It replaces it, because a pack with damage is a completely different repair from a pack without, and writing the body plan first and inspecting afterwards means writing it twice.
No heat, no welding and nothing drilled above the pack
That constraint reaches further into the job than people expect. It rules out routine techniques in the floor area, it rules out lifting the vehicle on the pack itself, and it means the repair plan has to establish what is directly underneath any operation before that operation is scheduled rather than when the technician gets there.
Structural and non-structural packs are two different vehicles
On cars with a non-structural pack, the battery bolts underneath as an assembly that is not carrying body load, and the body around it can be worked on largely as a body. On a structural-pack car it is a stressed member and the body is not complete without it. Same badge, same silhouette, two different answers to how the vehicle is supported and what can be removed while the shell is open.
Aluminium, steel and stainless, by model
The Model S and Model X are aluminium-intensive
Their bodies are largely aluminium, which means aluminium rules throughout: a heat cap that the metal gives no visual warning about, specified rivets and structural adhesive at published joints, and replacement rather than rework for anything that has been taken past its temperature limit. The Model 3 and Model Y are steel-intensive with aluminium at the ends
A high proportion of high-strength and ultra-high-strength steel runs through the passenger cell, with aluminium in some closures, in parts of the front structure and now in the castings. Two panels that touch can therefore want two different procedures, two different fasteners and two different corrosion treatments. The plan is written joint by joint rather than by area of damage.
Press-hardened steel is replaced, not straightened
Where a part is hot-formed, its strength comes from a controlled quench during forming and heat takes it straight back off. So it is not warmed to relax it, and where no sectioning joint is published for it, it comes out complete at the factory seams. A cell pulled back into shape without regard to that measures correctly and no longer collapses the way it was designed to.
The Cybertruck exterior is structural stainless and cannot be refinished
The outer panels are unpainted stainless with a specific surface finish, so there is no filler, no primer and no colour to blend into. A damaged panel is replaced rather than repaired, and the replacement has to match the grain and the finish of the panels either side of it. On this vehicle a dent is a parts problem rather than a paint problem, which inverts the usual relationship between the size of the damage and the size of the job.
Camera-based driver assistance and what actually moves a camera
Driver assistance runs on cameras, so every camera position is a calibration
The cameras sit at the top of the windscreen, in each B-pillar, in the front fender repeaters and at the rear of the vehicle. That list does not overlap much with the list of parts people expect a calibration to follow. A front fender repair has moved a camera. A B-pillar repair has moved a camera. A windscreen replacement has moved the main assembly. Each one is re-aimed and verified rather than refitted and hoped for.
The bracket is the calibration
A camera is aimed by the mounting it sits in. Restoring that mounting to specification is the actual repair, and the calibration afterwards is the confirmation. A camera sitting a fraction of a degree off is looking at the next lane by the time its field of view reaches braking distance, and there is nothing on the screen that will tell the driver so.
On cars without ultrasonic sensors, bumper work changes parking behaviour
Newer vehicles derive parking distance from the cameras rather than from sensors in the bumper skin. So a bumper repair on one of those changes a function that on any other car has nothing to do with the bumper cover, and there is no sensor fault to scan for when it is wrong. It gets verified by using it, in the conditions an owner will use it in, before the vehicle goes back.
Alignment comes before calibration, and a scan comes before both
Forward-facing systems reference the thrust line, so a four-wheel alignment that leaves the thrust angle out of specification puts every camera out with it. The alignment is corrected first and the calibration follows. A full system scan before anything comes apart records what the modules were already storing, and a second scan afterwards shows what cleared and what calibrated. That pair of documents is what supports a calibration line when an adjuster queries it.
Multi-coat paint and parts
The multi-coat white and red are three layers, and the colour lives in the middle one
A ground coat, a translucent mid coat and a clear. The mid coat is what produces the colour, and what it looks like depends on how much of it is on the panel, so the number of passes is part of the formula rather than an application preference. Reproduce the mix exactly and the pass count loosely and you get the right paint in the wrong colour. The clear ages and the pigment shifts, so a car that has stood outside here for several summers is no longer the colour it left the factory as. The comparison that decides the job is the mixed card against the panel next to the repair, under corrected light, rather than the card against the code.
Film build is measured before any correction
There is a finite amount of clear on any panel, and polishing through it turns a correction into a repaint. Measuring first is a two minute job that occasionally saves the panel, and it is worth doing on any car that has been detailed enthusiastically at some point in its life.
Parts research is an input to the plan, not a step after it
Whether a casting, a stainless panel or a specific closure is available, and on what timescale, can change whether the repair goes one way or the other rather than just changing a date. That question belongs in the estimate. Answering it after the vehicle is stripped is how a repair stops for weeks with the structure open.
