Not every Rolls-Royce is a spaceframe car
The aluminium Architecture of Luxury underpins the Phantom VIII, the Cullinan, the current Ghost and the Spectre. The Ghost that came before it, the Wraith and the Dawn are steel-bodied cars built on a different architecture altogether, with steel sectioning rules, steel joining methods and steel corrosion protection. The badge on the bonnet tells you nothing about which set applies. Working from the wrong one produces a plan that is confidently and completely wrong.
A spaceframe is a set of members, and it is replaced at joints
The structure is extrusions, castings and sheet joined with structural adhesive and mechanical fasteners. Damage is addressed by removing a complete member at its published joint and bonding a new one in, not by hooking the assembly up and pulling it back towards where it used to be. A pull loads a bonded joint in the direction the bond is weakest, and the damage it does there is not visible from either side afterwards.
The adhesive is structure, so the glue sets the heat budget
On a bonded car the bond line carries load. Structural adhesive degrades at temperatures well below anything that would worry the aluminium around it, which means the heat limit on the repair is set by the glue rather than by the metal. It also means the parts of the job that decide whether the joint is as strong as the factory made it, surface preparation, primer, adhesive open time, clamping pressure and cure schedule, are all invisible once the panel is on. Which is why the measurement is the proof
A three-dimensional measurement of the upper and lower structure against factory data for the VIN opens the job and closes it. Coach doors change how alignment error behaves
A rear-hinged door multiplies error towards its leading edge
Hang a door from the back and its free end is at the front, which is exactly where the gap is most visible and where the seal meets the airstream. A fraction of a degree of error at the hinge face becomes several millimetres at the leading edge by the time it has travelled the length of the door. On a coach door the hinge and the pillar it mounts to are the adjustment. Chasing the gap at the striker moves the symptom and leaves the cause.
The shut line between the doors belongs to both of them
The front door is hinged at the front, the rear door is hinged at the rear, and the gap between them is owned equally by two panels that swing from opposite ends. Move one to correct that gap and it goes out against the sill and the roof instead. The pair gets set as a pair, iteratively, against an aperture that has already been measured, which is a slower process than hanging two conventional doors and is not the same work.
The door closes itself, and the mechanism does not negotiate
A power-closing latch pulls the door through the last part of its travel to a fixed position. If the aperture is not where the factory put it, the mechanism either fails to catch or hauls the door into a seal that was never meant to compress that far, and it will do that quietly for months. A closing complaint after a body repair is very often an aperture problem wearing a latch costume, which is why the aperture is measured before anyone adjusts a latch.
The standard here is not visual, it is audible
The leading edge of a rear-hinged door faces directly into the airstream, and the car around it was engineered to be silent at speed. A seal compression error at that edge produces wind noise the owner will hear on the first drive on I-4 even though the gap photographs perfectly. The road test on one of these cars is part of the repair rather than a formality after it.
Gaps this tight leave a structural error nowhere to hide

On an ordinary car a small structural error disappears into the gap tolerance and nobody ever knows. Here there is nothing to disappear into. A shell that is a couple of millimetres out at a datum point shows up as a gap that tapers along its length, and the correction for that is at the structure, not at the panel. That is a good argument for measuring before the panels go anywhere near the car.
Reassembly is iterative, and it is a large part of the job
Panels are hung, measured, adjusted and measured again rather than bolted to their stops and released. On this marque that loop runs more times than it does on almost anything else, and the hours it takes are not the finishing touch at the end of the repair. They are a substantial line of the repair. An estimate that allows a couple of hours for fit has not priced the car it is looking at.
A tapering gap is a structural readout, so read it early
A gap that is correct at one end and wrong at the other is telling you something about the aperture rather than about the door. Recognising that before paint costs a measurement. Recognising it after paint costs the panel.
Bespoke and multi-stage paint is matched to the car, not the code
Many of these colours have no formula to look up
Rolls-Royce paint is routinely mixed for one car. On a bespoke commission there may be no published formula at all, only a retained record and the vehicle itself. That turns the spray-out card from good practice into the only way of establishing what the target actually is, and it makes the retained documentation for that specific car a real part of the parts research.
On a multi-stage finish the colour is a function of how many passes
A ground coat, a translucent mid coat and a clear. The mid coat is what makes the colour, and what it looks like depends on how much of it is on the panel, so the number of passes and the gun setup are part of the formula rather than an application detail. Reproduce the mix perfectly and the schedule loosely and you get the correct paint in the wrong colour. Central Florida sun has already moved the car off its own formula
The clear ages, the pigment shifts, and a car that has spent several summers here is no longer the colour that left Goodwood. The comparison that matters is the mixed card against the panel next to the repair, under corrected light, not the card against the code.
A coachline goes on last, and there is nothing after it
The line is drawn onto a finished panel, so the panel beneath it is completed first and any correction under it means going back through the line as well. It also has to pick up the line on the panels either side, which are not being painted and are not going to move. That constraint is set before the car is masked, not discovered when the brush comes out.
Ride height, calibration and parts
The air suspension levels the body against a reference on the body
Height sensors are mounted to the shell and linked to the suspension. The system does not know where the road is. It knows where the body is relative to the arm, so it will happily level a structure that has moved, or a corner where a sensor bracket is bent, and hand you a car that sits perfectly still and is wrong. The order is structural measurement first, ride height set to specification second, alignment third, calibration last. Run it backwards and every step is referencing something that already moved.
The calibrations that get missed are the ones cosmetic work triggers
The camera behind the screen and the radar at the front of the car are on everybody list. The surround-view cameras living in the mirror housings and around the body are not, because the work that disturbs them, refinishing a mirror cap, replacing a bumper cover, looks like paint. Where a car also carries a thermal night-vision camera at the front, that is one more device a front-end repair has moved. Every one of them is aimed again afterwards against factory data.
On the Spectre the high-voltage system comes down first
The system is shut down and proven de-energised to procedure before any structural work begins, and the pack and its underbody protection are inspected before a repair plan exists. Damage found there does not adjust the plan. It replaces it.
Parts research belongs in the estimate, not after teardown
Production volumes here are very small and some body parts are effectively made against an order. Whether a panel exists, and on what timescale, is an input to the repair plan rather than a scheduling detail that follows it, because the answer can change whether a panel is repaired or replaced. Establishing it after the shell is open is how a car sits stripped for weeks.
A scan before disassembly and a scan after
A full system scan before anything comes apart records what the modules were already carrying, and a second scan afterwards shows what cleared and what calibrated. That pair of documents is what supports a calibration line on the estimate when an adjuster asks about it.

The gap between the two doors is also shared by panels hinged from opposite ends, so correcting it on one throws the other out against the sill or the roof. The pair is set together against a measured aperture rather than adjusted independently.
- The paint code matched. Why did the panel still need a spray-out card?
- Because on a bespoke or multi-stage colour the code is not the answer. Many of these colours are mixed for a single car and have no book formula at all, and on a multi-stage finish the colour is set by how much translucent mid coat is on the panel, so the number of passes is part of the formula. Add several Central Florida summers of clear ageing and pigment shift and the target is the car in front of you, matched under corrected light, not the entry in a deck.
