An AMG is not a trim level, a G-Class is a ladder frame, and on a current Mercedes the calibration list is as long as the parts list. Those three facts shape the whole repair, and the sections below set out how.
Mercedes builds three quite different things under one badge. A current C, E or S-Class is an aluminium-intensive unibody wrapped around a press-hardened steel safety cell. A G-Class is a separate body bolted to a ladder frame, which is a different structural animal altogether. And an AMG is not a trim package: track width, cooling, subframes and reinforcement differ from the car it is based on. Layer the densest driver-assistance electronics of any marque on this page over all three, and you get a repair where the calibration list is as long as the parts list.
AMG is a different car, not a faster trim level
The structure under an AMG is not the structure under the base car
Wider track, different arches and wings, a larger cooling package and additional bracing and subframe reinforcement to carry loads the standard car was never asked to handle. A front-end parts list pulled from the base model will not fit, and a generic lookup returns a component with the right name and the wrong geometry. On these cars the parts research is part of the estimate, not an administrative step after it.
The aero and cooling parts do a job
Splitters, ducts, diffusers and undertrays on an AMG feed radiators and manage lift. A visually similar part changes the airflow into the coolers, which on a car that gets used properly is a mechanical problem rather than a cosmetic one. Fitment is not the test. What the part does to airflow is.
Carbon ceramic discs change what a wheel impact means
An iron rotor that has been knocked can often be machined back. A carbon ceramic disc cannot be resurfaced, so a strike that chips or cracks one is a replacement rather than a repair. That also makes the inspection different: the disc is examined for edge damage and cracking rather than measured for runout and skimmed, and the surrounding suspension and brake lines are inspected in the same pass because a wheel that hit something hard enough to mark a ceramic disc rarely stopped there.
Aluminium skin, steel safety cell, and what that forces

The newer cars use aluminium across much of the outer skin, the doors, the bonnet and a good deal of the front structure, with hot-formed steel concentrated around the passenger cell and the pillars. Two panels that touch can require two different procedures, so the plan is written joint by joint rather than by area of damage.
Aluminium gives no warning as it heats
Steel reddens and a technician backs off. Aluminium looks identical at two hundred degrees and at the point where it collapses, so heat on the repair is measured with an indicator on the panel rather than judged by eye. Metal taken past its temperature cap is permanently softened, it does not recover on cooling, and the correct outcome for that part is replacement rather than rework.

The two metals cannot be fusion welded to each other and they corrode each other on contact if they are not isolated. The factory joint uses fasteners and structural adhesive with specified isolation, and the repair uses the same, which makes the corrosion protection at that seam a structural operation rather than a finishing one.

Which repairs trigger which calibration
The mapping is specific and it is worth an owner knowing it. A windscreen replacement, or anything that disturbs the camera bracket behind it, means the forward camera is recalibrated. A front bumper, grille or the radar bracket behind them means the forward radar is re-aimed. A rear bumper or quarter panel means the blind-spot and cross-traffic radars in the rear corners. A mirror, grille or tailgate carrying a camera means the surround-view set. And suspension or alignment work of any kind means all of it, for the reason below.
Alignment comes before calibration, never after
The cameras and radars are aimed relative to the car's thrust line, which is a function of the suspension geometry, not of where the bodywork ended up. Correct the alignment after the calibration and the calibration is void. Getting that order wrong produces a car that passes every check inside the shop and is wrong the moment it reaches a road, which is the worst category of mistake available on a modern car.
What happens when a calibration is skipped
Mostly, nothing visible. The systems do not usually set a fault to announce that they are aimed at the wrong part of the world. Lane keeping steers toward an edge it has mislocated. Adaptive cruise reads a car in the adjacent lane as being in yours, or fails to see the one that is. The failure mode is silence, which is exactly why the calibration reports at the end of the job matter more on this marque than on almost any other.
The G-Class is a ladder frame and gets its own plan
A G-Class is a body bolted to a ladder frame
Everything else in the range is a unibody. The G is not, which means the frame and the body are two separate assessments. A frame that has moved will not necessarily show up in how the doors fit, because the body is mounted to it through compliant mounts that absorb exactly the sort of small misalignment you would otherwise use as evidence. The frame gets measured on its own terms.
Its squareness is the thing that has to be right
On a ladder-frame vehicle, diagonal measurements across the frame are what reveal a twist or a diamond, and those are the faults that produce a vehicle which tracks slightly sideways and wears tyres on one edge. It is a fault an owner reports as the steering wheel being off-centre, and it is not fixed by adjusting the steering wheel.

A magno finish cannot be polished
On a gloss finish a small defect is corrected by compounding and polishing. Polishing a matte clear raises the gloss in that spot, so the correction ends up more visible than the flaw was. A magno panel is either right when it leaves the booth or it goes back through, and the sheen level itself has to be matched alongside the colour. That is an extra variable gloss work simply does not have.
The whites and silvers are multi-stage, so film build is part of the colour
A tinted or pearl coat over a ground coat takes its final appearance from how much material went on, not from the formula alone. Two panels mixed identically and sprayed to different thicknesses will not match. The target is fixed on a spray-out card made with the same gun and the same number of passes the car will get, then held against the panel in daylight before anything is sprayed on the vehicle.

A code describes the car as built. Sustained ultraviolet moves it, and Central Florida supplies plenty. On an older car, mixing strictly to code reproduces the original colour rather than the colour of the panels either side of the repair, which is why the card and the panel settle it rather than the database.
Parts strategy on a car that calibrates itself
A part that fits is not the same as a part that positions a sensor
A bumper cover can bolt on perfectly and hold a radar bracket a few millimetres from where the calibration expects it. On a car with this many sensors the parts decision and the calibration decision are the same decision, and a part that will not let the aim hold has stopped being the cheaper option.
AMG part numbers are not base-car part numbers
Because the structure, the cooling and the track width differ, so do the parts, including several that look identical in a catalogue photograph. Confirming numbers against the VIN rather than against the model name is what keeps a job from stalling on the day the wrong wing arrives.
