The joining method follows the material rather than the shop's habit, and when it does not, the mistake is invisible until the day it matters.

The material changes from one panel to the next

Porsche uses high-strength and hot-formed steel where intrusion resistance matters, around the passenger cell, the pillars and the roof reinforcements, and aluminium across much of the outer skin, the floor and the front structure where mass matters more than hardness. Two panels that touch each other can carry two entirely different repair procedures, which is why a repair plan on one of these cars is written per joint rather than per area of damage.

Steel and aluminium cannot be welded to each other

There is no fusion weld between the two in body repair. The factory joins them mechanically and with structural adhesive, and the repair joins them the same way, with the specified fastener and the specified bond line. The second half of that joint is corrosion protection: the two metals in contact without isolation attack each other, so the coating and the isolating washer at that seam are structural maintenance and not a finishing touch.

How aluminium is joined and why

A hot-formed part is not straightened, it is replaced

The strength of a press-hardened steel part comes from its heat treatment. Heating it to pull it back removes that treatment permanently and does not return it on cooling, so the manufacturer designates most of those parts replace-only. A shop that pulls one straight has produced a component that measures correct and will not perform in the next impact, and nothing about the finished car will show it.

Carrying the new colour into the adjacent panels puts the transition in the middle of a surface where the light is even, instead of at a shut line where two versions of the same colour meet in a hard dark edge under direct sun. That is the difference between a repair that is invisible and one that is merely close.

A bumper cover can bolt on perfectly and still hold the radar bracket a few millimetres away from where the calibration expects it.
