A 1978 308 GTS came in for scheduled maintenance and an overhaul of its cooling system. Cars of this age are not difficult to work on so much as unforgiving of shortcuts, and the cooling system is where that shows first.
The layout is the reason. The V8 sits transversely behind the cabin and the radiator sits at the front of the car, so coolant travels the full length of the chassis and back through pipework running down the central tunnel. That is a long run with a lot of surface area, several joints, and a set of hoses that are awkward to inspect properly without committing to the job. Every one of those joints is a place a forty-eight-year-old car can weep.
Age works against the system in ways that are not visible from the top. Original radiators silt up internally and lose capacity long before they leak, so a car can read normal on a gauge at speed and climb the moment it sits in traffic. Electric fans and their switches are a second common culprit, and a fan that is not commanded on is indistinguishable from a cooling system that is simply undersized until somebody checks. Hoses that have hardened will hold pressure at rest and let go when the system is hot.
Overhauling the system rather than replacing the part that failed is the approach that makes sense on a car like this. Anything left in place is the same age as the component that gave up, and on a mid-engined car the labor to reach the tunnel pipework is most of the cost of doing it at all.
Alongside the cooling work the car had its scheduled maintenance. The engine runs on four Weber carburetors, visible under their individual filters in the photograph, which is the arrangement these cars used before fuel injection arrived at the end of the decade. Carburetors need balancing and adjustment as a matter of routine, and they reward a car that is otherwise in good order.
