A McLaren is not a metal car with carbon trim. It is a carbon car with metal attached to it. That single fact changes how damage gets assessed, what a repair costs, and which shops can legitimately touch it.
Owners find this out the hard way. A curbed splitter or a parking lot hit produces an estimate that looks nothing like a Mercedes quote. Or worse, a shop shrugs and quotes a replacement part with a twelve week lead time from Woking.
Here is what is actually inside the car, what composite repair can and cannot fix, and what the work costs in Orlando.
What McLaren Actually Builds Out of Carbon
McLaren has used a carbon structural tub on every road car since the F1. The names change by generation. The MP4-12C and 650S used the MonoCell. The 570S and 540C used MonoCell II. The 720S and 750S use MonoCage II. The Artura moved to the McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture. P1 and Senna used MonoCage variants of their own.
The principle is constant. The passenger cell is one bonded carbon structure carrying crash loads, suspension pickup points, and powertrain mounts. Around it hang aluminum subframes and crash structures, plus body panels that in most cases are aluminum or SMC composite rather than carbon. Then there is the carbon you paid extra for: roof scoops, engine covers, mirror caps, side blades, splitters, diffusers, wing elements, interior trim. On a spec-heavy 720S that list gets long and expensive fast.
Three completely different repair problems live under one word:
- Structural tub carbon. The monocell or monocage itself.
- Semi-structural composite. Aero elements, splitters, diffusers, and mounting points that carry real load but are not the passenger cell.
- Cosmetic carbon. Exposed weave panels and trim where the failure is clear coat, finish, or a surface crack.
Lumping them together is how owners get bad advice.
What Can Be Repaired and What Cannot
Start with the hard limit. Damage to the structural monocell or monocage is generally not a repair job. The passenger cell is a single engineered laminate with a specific layup, fiber orientation, and resin system, and it manages a crash by controlled failure. Once it is cracked, delaminated, or crushed, restoring the original load path with a patch repair is not something a shop should promise you. In practice the answer is tub replacement or a total loss decision.
That sounds bleak. It usually is not, because the car is engineered so the tub survives what would bend a steel unibody. The aluminum front crash structure and subframe are sacrificial by design. In a significant front impact, the correct outcome is a destroyed crash structure and an intact tub. That is the car working as designed, and it is a repairable car.
What is genuinely repairable:
- Aero and semi-structural composite. Cracked splitters, chipped diffusers, damaged wing elements, and fractured side skirts can be rebuilt with a laminate repair matched to the original layup, then refinished. This is engineering work, not filler and paint.
- Cosmetic carbon panels. Roof scoops, engine covers, mirror caps, and interior trim with impact cracks or surface damage can be repaired and weave matched so the twill lines up across the seam.
- Clear coat failure. Faded, cloudy, spider cracked, or peeling UV clear is a refinish problem, not a structural one, and it is extremely common in Florida.
- Bonded and bolted attachments. Cracked mounting bosses and hardpoints on aero components can often be rebuilt rather than replaced.
What is not: cracked, crushed, or delaminated passenger cell structure. Any composite where the damage cannot be fully mapped, because you cannot repair what you cannot see. And parts where an honest repair would cost more than the replacement and still carry more risk.

How Composite Damage Is Actually Assessed
Carbon does not dent, and it does not tell you the truth from the outside. Steel deforms where it was hit. Carbon can absorb an impact, look nearly fine at the point of contact, and separate its plies six inches away where you never thought to look. That hidden delamination is why composite assessment is a different discipline.
The sequence on a McLaren:
- Tub inspection first. If the monocell is compromised, nothing else on the estimate matters.
- Tap testing. A trained ear across the panel finds voids and delamination as a dull change in pitch against the sharp ring of sound laminate. Low tech, and it works.
- Mapping the damage boundary. The repair area is defined by where the plies are actually separated, not where the paint is scuffed. That boundary is almost always larger than the visible damage.
- Backside inspection. Panels get pulled where possible, because impact damage frequently shows on the inner skin first.

Cosmetic Weave and Clear Coat Repair
This is the most common carbon job we see on McLarens in Central Florida, and it has nothing to do with a collision. Exposed carbon is protected by a UV stable clear coat, and Florida sun is brutal on it. Left in the open year round, that clear degrades in a predictable order: slight haze, then milky cloudiness, then fine spider cracking, then yellowing, then peeling. Once UV reaches the resin under the clear, the fiber pattern itself starts to bleach.
Caught at the haze or cracking stage, the repair is a strip and re-clear. The failed clear comes off, the weave is corrected, and UV stable automotive clear goes back on to a wet gloss. Caught late, the top ply may need reworking before anything can be sprayed, and the cost roughly doubles.
Weave matching separates competent work from obvious work. Carbon has a direction. A twill that runs 45 degrees on one side of a repair and 40 on the other reads as wrong even when the observer cannot say why. On a repaired mirror cap or engine cover, pattern alignment across the seam is the whole job.

The replacement comparison

Why a Steel and Aluminum Shop Cannot Do This
This is not snobbery. It is process incompatibility.
A conventional collision center is built around metal. Its tools pull, straighten, weld, and fill. None of those operations exist in composite work. Heat that is routine on steel will destroy a resin system. A frame machine has nothing to grab on a bonded carbon tub. Body filler over a delaminated laminate hides the damage instead of fixing it, and it will crack again within a season.
Composite repair is a different skill set: reading the original layup, cutting a scarf or step joint into sound material, laying replacement plies in the correct orientation, vacuum consolidating them, and curing under controlled conditions. Then the finish work starts.
There is also the parts problem. A shop that cannot repair carbon has one option, which is to order the part. On a McLaren that turns a $2,500 repair into a $9,000 part plus months of waiting, and the insurer fights it. Protecting Exposed Carbon Afterward
Finish a carbon repair in Orlando without protecting it and you have started a clock. Three options, in ascending order of protection:
- Ceramic coating. Adds UV resistance and gloss, makes cleaning easier, slows oxidation. It does not stop rock chips. Best on interior carbon, engine bay pieces, and panels that see sun more than debris.
- Paint protection film. The right answer for exposed carbon on the front of the car. Splitters, hood scoops, and leading edges take rock strikes that chip clear coat down to the weave. Film is a sacrificial wear layer and it blocks UV on the panels it covers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a cracked McLaren monocell be repaired?
Generally no. The monocell and monocage structures are engineered single laminates that carry crash loads, and once that structure is cracked, crushed, or delaminated, restoring the original load path with a sectional repair is not something a body shop should promise. The realistic outcomes are tub replacement or a total loss determination. That is different from aero components and cosmetic panels, which are frequently repairable to full strength.
How do I know if my carbon damage is structural or cosmetic?
You often cannot tell by looking, which is the point. Carbon transmits impact energy and can delaminate away from the visible mark. A proper assessment includes tap testing across the panel, inspecting the inner skin where access allows, and mapping the actual boundary of ply separation rather than the boundary of the scuff. Bring the car in rather than guessing from photographs.
Why is my carbon fiber cloudy and cracked when the car has never been hit?
That is UV clear coat failure, and in Florida it is the most common carbon problem we see. The clear over exposed weave degrades under sustained sun, going hazy, then milky, then spider cracked, then yellow. Caught early it is a strip and re-clear job. Caught after UV has reached the resin under the clear, the repair becomes significantly more involved and more expensive.
Is repairing carbon aero cheaper than replacing it?
Usually by a wide margin. OEM McLaren carbon aero parts frequently run $5,000 to $12,000 before finish work, with long factory lead times. A laminate repair that restores strength and weave finish commonly lands at a fraction of that. The honest exception is damage severe enough that the repair would approach replacement cost, and in that case we tell you to replace the part.
Will the repair be visible?
On cosmetic weave the goal is pattern alignment across the seam so the twill reads continuous, and done well it is very difficult to find. On painted composite the repair is invisible once refinished. What matters more than appearance is whether the laminate underneath actually carries load again, and that is what the inspection and documentation are for.
